Munich. They are the two German golfers who have delivered the strongest recent performances on the major professional tours. Nicolai von Dellingshausen celebrated his maiden DP World Tour victory at the Austrian Alpine Open in early June, while Matti Schmid finished runner-up – just one stroke behind winner Ben Griffin (USA) – at the PGA TOUR’s Charles Schwab Challenge in late May. Both will tee off this week at the BMW International Open (2–6 July, Golfclub München Eichenried) and are eager to carry their momentum into the only DP World Tour event in Germany.
On Tuesday, the two players appeared relaxed and optimistic at Golfclub München Eichenried, clearly excited about playing in front of their home crowd. Von Dellingshausen, who will play the first two rounds in an all-German group alongside Martin Kaymer and Marcel Siem, said: “I’ll definitely feel nervous on the first tee when so many fans are watching but it’s such a boost, because the crowd is totally behind us. They cheer and suffer with us. I’m just incredibly excited for the week.”
Reflecting on his runner-up finish on the PGA TOUR, Schmid said: “I’ve knocked on the door a few times now – especially with that second place. It was a great battle, unfortunately without the ending I had hoped for, but it was still a valuable experience. You learn from all these moments, and I try to analyse them well and keep improving.”
The Regensburg native will play on Thursday and Friday with Edoardo Molinari (ITA) and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen (DEN). Their group tees off in the first round at 8:10 a.m. from tee 10. Siem, Kaymer, and von Dellingshausen will begin their round at 12:50 p.m. from tee 1. They’ll be followed at 1:00 p.m. by defending champion Ewen Ferguson (SCO), Patrick Reed (USA), and Eugenio Chacarra (ESP). At 1:10 p.m., Ryder Cup Team Europe captain Luke Donald, Jordan Smith (both ENG), and David Puig (ESP) will tee off.
