ZF, the German automotive technology supplier, has commenced production of its Electric Park Brake (EPB) system in India for the first time in the passenger vehicle segment. The system will be integrated into a newly launched electric vehicle platform developed by an Indian original equipment manufacturer.
The production milestone represents ZF’s initial deployment of EPB technology in India’s passenger car market. The company plans to supply several thousand units of the brake system over multiple years as part of the partnership agreement.
ZF’s EPB system replaces traditional mechanical parking brake mechanisms with electronic controls. The technology is designed to reduce drag and minimize noise and vibration levels, which can contribute to improved fuel efficiency in vehicles. The system activates through a button interface and integrates with the vehicle’s overall braking system.
The brake system includes features such as dynamic actuation and brake pad wear monitoring. It also enables two-wheel anti-lock emergency braking functions and can be scaled across different vehicle categories, from passenger cars to light commercial vehicles.
India’s automotive market has seen increased adoption of electric vehicles and advanced safety technologies in recent years. The country’s government has implemented policies to encourage domestic manufacturing and the development of cleaner transportation solutions.
ZF operates as a global supplier of automotive components and systems, serving manufacturers in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and industrial applications. The company reported revenue of €46.6 billion in 2023 and maintains 162 production facilities across 31 countries with approximately 168,700 employees worldwide.
According to ZF, more than 250 million EPB calipers are currently in use on roads globally. The company’s Indian operations align with the government’s “Make in India” manufacturing initiative.
Akash Passey, President of ZF Group in India, stated that the EPB production launch demonstrates the company’s commitment to providing mobility solutions for local market requirements while supporting Indian automakers in developing competitive products.
