BJP MP from Bhopal, Alok Sharma, on Sunday distributed helmets to two-wheeler riders outside the police headquarters, urging them to treat safety as a personal responsibility rather than a rule to avoid.
He said the district collector has issued an order to stop supply of petrol to two-wheeler riders not wearing the helmet. He urged people to wear helmets not for anyone else but themselves.
Sharma said non-compliance of traffic rules is proving costly for us and so many people have lost their lives in accidents because they were not wearing helmets. They could have been saved if they were wearing a helmet, he said.
Sharma, while emphasising that wearing helmets and seat belts should become a habit with two-wheeler and four-wheeler riders, said the people should not feel bad if the police and the administration resort to coercive methods for inculcating the habit among commuters.
