Hindmetal Becomes First Company in India to Deploy Advanced Electromagnetic Technologies for Mineral Exploration

Hindmetal Exploration Services Pvt. Ltd. (HESPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindustan Zinc Limited, has become the first company in India to implement advanced electromagnetic (EM) technologies for mineral exploration. The deployment marks a significant step in modernizing exploration techniques across the country.

The company is utilizing tools such as Borehole Electromagnetic (EM) systems for subsurface surveys and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) sensors for surface-level exploration. Borehole EM technology enables high-resolution imaging of conductive ore bodies, including sulfide deposits, allowing for more accurate mapping of their geometry and conductivity. SQUID sensors, known for their high sensitivity, are capable of detecting weak electromagnetic signals, making them effective in identifying deeply buried or low-conductivity mineral targets.

In addition to EM technologies, Hindmetal is integrating drone-based surveys equipped with LiDAR and hyperspectral imaging to conduct detailed terrain mapping over large areas. These methods support both brownfield exploration near existing mining zones and greenfield initiatives aimed at discovering new mineral deposits in underexplored regions.

The organization is also employing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) models to analyze diverse datasets—such as geological, geophysical, geochemical, and satellite data—to improve decision-making and predictive accuracy in exploration planning. This data-driven approach aims to reduce exploration timelines and increase the success rate of mineral discovery.

With a strategic focus on base metals and critical minerals, Hindmetal is working to enhance India’s mineral resource assessment capabilities. The company follows a systematic, science-based “Data-to-Discovery” framework, offering end-to-end exploration services supported by a team of full-time specialists in geology, geophysics, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and drilling.

Hindmetal Exploration Services has been accredited by the Quality Council of India’s National Accreditation Board for Education and Training (QCI-NABET) as a Category A Exploration Agency, in accordance with Government of India guidelines—a recognition of its technical competence and operational standards.

Backed by over two decades of experience in base metal exploration, the company collaborates with industry experts, technology providers, and consultants to deliver tailored exploration solutions across varied terrains and project scales.

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, stated, “The integration of advanced scientific methods and digital technologies is transforming mineral exploration. Our investment in innovation through Hindmetal supports more efficient and precise resource identification, contributing to India’s long-term mineral security.”

The adoption of these technologies positions Hindmetal as a key player in advancing exploration practices in India, with potential implications for improved resource estimation, reduced environmental impact, and increased exploration efficiency across the mining sector.
