Maruti Suzuki Bets on Victoris to Expand SUV Play, Eyes Exports to 100 Countries

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has unveiled its much-anticipated mid-size SUV, Victoris, marking a bold step in its strategy to deepen its presence in India’s booming SUV market and expand exports to over 100 countries. This happens to be MSIL’s first strong hybrid product to be sold via Arena dealerships.

Positioned as a flagship under the Arena channel, Victoris will complement the Nexa-sold Grand Vitara, giving Maruti Suzuki a dual offering in the mid-size SUV space — the fastest-growing and most competitive segment in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

Mid-Size SUV: The New Battleground

Over the past four years, Maruti Suzuki’s SUV share of overall sales has nearly tripled — from 8.9% in FY2020-21 to almost 28% in FY2024-25 — powered largely by entry-level models Brezza and Fronx. But in the mid-size SUV category, rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos continue to dominate volumes, while Tata Motors (Harrier, Safari), Toyota (Urban Cruiser Hyryder), and Honda (Elevate) have all stepped up their presence.

With Victoris joining the Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki is sharpening its attack. The move reflects the company’s recognition that a single product cannot capture the breadth of demand in a segment that spans both mass-market and aspirational buyers.

Speaking at the launch conference of Victoris, Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India, said:

“Victoris is designed for India’s new-age customers, who are tech-savvy, safety-conscious, and environmentally responsible. With this launch, we are taking another big step forward in our SUV journey. We are confident it will delight customers in India and win appreciation across global markets.”

Features and Technology

The Victoris is positioned as a high-tech, safety-forward model, equipped with connected features, Alexa Auto integration, Gen-3 telematics, and what Maruti calls a “theatre on wheels” infotainment experience.

In safety, the Victoris becomes the first Arena model to offer Level-2 ADAS (automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, lane departure prevention) along with six airbags as standard. The SUV has also secured a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating.

Multiple powertrain options — petrol, strong hybrid, and CNG — will be offered. The hybrid draws from lithium-ion batteries produced locally at TDS Lithium-Ion Battery Gujarat Pvt Ltd in Gujarat, a key localisation push for the company.

Exports to 100 Countries

Beyond domestic ambitions, Maruti Suzuki is positioning Victoris as a global product. The company confirmed exports will soon begin to more than 100 countries, reinforcing India’s role as Suzuki Motor Corporation’s manufacturing hub.

Takeuchi added: “Victoris comes from the Latin word for ‘victory’. We are confident it will not only resonate with India’s young and aspirational buyers but also carry our success story to over 100 countries across the world.”

Dual Play vs Cannibalisation Risk

With Grand Vitara retailed exclusively through Nexa and the Victoris through Arena outlets — which span the length and breadth of the country — Maruti Suzuki is clearly segmenting its strategy.

Grand Vitara: Positioned as a premium, urban SUV for aspirational buyers in Nexa’s upmarket retail environment.
Victoris: A mass-reach Arena flagship, leveraging the brand’s widest sales channel to capture scale across metros, Tier-2, and Tier-3 markets.

This dual play aims to expand Maruti’s footprint in the mid-size SUV space, but it also raises the challenge of cannibalisation. With overlapping features such as hybrids and connected technology, the company will need to carefully differentiate the two models’ positioning so they complement rather than eat into each other’s share.

The Victoris underscores Maruti Suzuki’s intent to capture scale through Arena while maintaining aspirational pull through Nexa. If it can manage the balance and prevent cannibalisation, the company could not only claw back share from Creta and Seltos but also establish India as an export hub for its next wave of SUVs.
