Skoda Bets on Affordability With New Epiq EV, Expands Electric Portfolio

Skoda Auto has previewed its most accessible electric vehicle yet — the Skoda Epic — to widen its customer base and strengthen its role in the Volkswagen Group’s push for mass-market electrification.

Unveiled by CEO Klaus Zellmer at the IAA Munich Mobility Show 2025, the Epic is positioned as the brand’s entry point into electromobility, complementing the larger Enyaq and the recently launched Elroq.

Skoda’s third all-electric model will be designed to broaden consumer choice when affordability is emerging as the most significant barrier to EV adoption.

Zellmer described the car as “stylish yet approachable, intuitive yet practical, compact yet surprisingly spacious”, adding that the Epic would embody Skoda’s traditional strengths of clever functionality and value-for-money. The model will have features such as a mobile digital key, intelligent parking assist, and an optional 360-degree camera, while offering room for five passengers.

Crucially, the Epic is expected to be priced close to its ICE sibling in several markets, a move that could make it one of the first EVs to match combustion-powered alternatives on sticker price. If realised, this strategy could significantly boost EV adoption in price-sensitive European markets where cost remains a major hurdle.

According to Zellmer, “Epic” is inspired by the Greek word for story or poem. It symbolises something “grand, magnificent and unforgettable” — an apt metaphor for the new chapter Skoda hopes to write with its EV line-up.

While the final unveiling is scheduled for mid-2026, the reveal signals Skoda’s determination to accelerate its electric roadmap. For the Volkswagen Group, it also underscores the strategic role of its volume brands — Volkswagen, Skoda, Cupra, Seat and VW Commercial Vehicles — which collectively account for over 60% of its global volumes and form the “engine room” of its electrification strategy.

Zellmer summed it up by calling the Epic “more than just a car, but an invitation to join the Skoda family.” With its balance of design, practicality, affordability, and the promise of near price parity with ICE models in select markets, the Epic could become a pivotal product in ensuring the brand stays competitive as the EV race moves into the true mass market.
