The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has flagged irregularities in how some vehicle dealers are handling online vehicle tax payments on behalf of their customers and warned of strict action against defaulters.
Since Oct 21, 2023, the AMC vehicle tax department has been registering dealers in the city under an online module that allows them to pay tax for customers by uploading the vehicle’s bill or invoice. However, scrutiny of uploaded documents revealed multiple violations.
In some cases, the tax amount paid was lower than the amount mentioned on the invoice; in others, bills of different vehicles were uploaded. There were also instances where dealers uploaded unrelated documents such as Aadhaar or PAN cards, or unclear photographs of vehicles instead of proper invoices.
To tackle these discrepancies, AMC has introduced a new online system to automatically generate notices against dealers who default or submit fraudulent documents. Notices will appear directly on the dealer’s login and will also be communicated via text message to the registered mobile number. Dealers will be given a fixed time period to respond or rectify the error.
Officials said that if a dealer fails to act on the notice, the AMC will initiate the process of cancelling their registration in the online vehicle tax module.
According to AMC, the new notice generation system is expected to streamline compliance and curb fraudulent practices, ensuring that vehicle tax is paid correctly and promptly.
