New Delhi: India’s auto industry witnessed a mixed performance in August 2025, with passenger vehicle sales declining even as two- and three-wheelers continued to post steady growth, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday.

Passenger vehicle sales dropped 8.8 per cent to 3,21,840 units in August 2025 in the domestic market, compared with 3,52,921 units in the same month last year, reflecting subdued market sentiment. Total production of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycles stood at 26,93,049 units during the month, the data showed.

Two- and three-wheeler sales
Three-wheeler sales rose 8.3 per cent year-on-year to 75,759 units in August, against 69,962 units a year earlier. This included 63,854 passenger carriers, 9,751 goods carriers, 144 e-rickshaws and 810 e-carts.

On the other hand, the two-wheeler segment recorded a 7.1 per cent increase, with sales rising to 18,33,921 units from 17,11,662 units in August 2024. Within the category, scooter sales stood at 6,83,397 units, motorcycles at 11,06,638 units and mopeds at 43,886 units. No sales were reported in the quadricycle segment during the month.

Commenting on the outlook, SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said “The landmark decision of the Government of India to reduce GST rates on vehicles will go a long way in enabling broader access to mobility and inject fresh momentum into the Indian automotive sector in the upcoming festive season.”
