International automotive supplier FORVIA HELLA announced Monday that it has launched the world’s first intelligent Power Distribution Module (iPDM) into series production for a premium manufacturer.
The system represents the first automotive application of electronic fuses, known as eFuses, and is designed to ensure reliable power supply for highly automated driving functions.
The iPDM continuously monitors vehicle power supply through built-in eFuses and corresponding software, allowing the system to identify potential failure risks such as cable overheating before they become critical. This capability enables safety-related driving functions, including driver assistance, steering, and braking systems, to maintain operation even when faults occur.
FORVIA HELLA has also developed Zone Controllers, which will enter series production in mid-2028 for another automotive manufacturer. These units collect, process, and forward data while managing energy distribution to electrical consumers in specific vehicle zones. Zone Controllers also gather real-time sensor data to control actuators for windows, lighting, and windshield wipers.
The eFuses represent a departure from conventional automotive fuses, which melt and become unusable when defects occur. Electronic fuses offer reversible functionality, eliminating maintenance requirements and allowing more flexible installation locations.
According to the company, this technology can reduce wiring harness weight by up to 25 percent through improved installation flexibility and more precise fuse sizing.
FORVIA HELLA has developed an integrated product solution called iConF that combines an eFuse with a custom ASIC chip and control software. This integration reduces installation space requirements and component needs while enabling data acquisition and processing capabilities.
The company manufactures more than 13 million electronic control units annually and has operated in the electronics sector for over 25 years. Development of the iPDM and Zone Controllers takes place at facilities in Lippstadt, Germany; Craiova, Romania; and Pune, India. Series production occurs at the company’s electronics plant in Timisoara, Romania.
FORVIA HELLA reports that total order volume for iPDM and Zone Controller projects exceeds €1 billion. The products are positioned as key components for modern electrical and electronic architectures in software-defined vehicles, addressing the evolving requirements of automotive control systems.
