Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bhilai, have developed a self-healing polymer that can repair itself at room temperature. The breakthrough material, described as “impact-resistant,” could enhance the safety and longevity of electric vehicles, aircraft, and protective gear.

The new polymer can absorb strong impacts and heal itself without external heat or treatment. Small scratches on the material can disappear in minutes. Even after being cut, the two pieces can be pressed back together to reattach and regain a strength similar to the original material. The research team, led by Dr Sanjib Banerjee, includes Swarup Maity, Priyank Sinha, and Koushik Mahata.

“This innovation marks a paradigm shift in how we think about material resilience. From EV battery casings to aerospace fuselages and body armour, the potential applications are vast,” Dr Banerjee said.

The researchers used a low-cost, scalable method to create the polymer, making it suitable for industrial use. The material is thermally stable, highly adhesive, and reusable over several cycles without losing its properties. It functions as a smart shield, remaining tough during normal use but softening to absorb shocks and prevent cracks. By reducing the need for replacements and repairs, the polymer helps lower carbon emissions and material waste, supporting global sustainability goals. The findings were published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials. Dr Banerjee said, “We have applied for a patent for it and are hopeful of getting it soon.”
