Volkswagen India’s Taigun midsize SUV, launched on September 23, 2021, has turned four years old today. As per SIAM wholesales data, the Taigun has sold a total of 84,797 units in the domestic market till end-August 2025 and 45,019 units have been shipped to overseas markets. This gives the Taigun a combined sales figure of 129,816 units since launch.
A total of 129,816 VW Taigun SUVs have been sold in the domestic and export markets. FY2023, with 21,736 units was the best fiscal in the domestic market and FY2025 (14,903 units) for exports.
As the wholesales numbers ((see data table above) reveal, FY2023 was the Taigun’s best fiscal to date with sales of 21,736 units, when it accounted for the bulk – 53% – of VW India’s PV sales of 41,326 units. Since then, however, demand has slowed down – FY2024’s 20,485 units were down 6% YoY and FY2025’s 19,910 units lower by 3% YoY. The 5,777 units sold in the first five months of FY2026 are down 28% YoY (April-August 2024: 8,030 units), giving the Taigun a 39% share of VW India’s PV sales of 14,719 units (down 11% YoY0. The Virtus sedan, with 8,561 units (up 6% YoY) and a 58% share of the company’s April-August 2025 sales is the best-selling product to date. VW India also sells the Tiguan SUV and the Golf GTI hatchback.
One likely reason for the slowed-down sales could be that the Taigun feels a segment lower compared to the midsize SUV segment leader Hyundai Creta , the Kia Seltos or the Maruti Grand Vitara.
On the export front, the Taigun with total shipments of 45,019 units till end-August 2025 accounts for 35% of the Taigun’s overall domestic and export wholesales of 129,816 units. FY2025 was its best fiscal with 14,903 units and 18% YoY growth, giving it the eighth rank in the Top 10 made-in-India exported SUVs for FY2025.
As is known, the Taigun is the first product offering by the VW brand in the midsize SUV segment, developed on the globally acclaimed MQB A0 IN platform under the strategic India 2.0 project.
The Taigun, which is the sister SUV to the Skoda Kushaq under the India 2.0 project, is part of the growing midsize SUV market in India which includes models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Mahindra’s BE6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs, and the Tata Curvv. It is offered only with petrol engines – a 115hp 1.0 TSI turbo-petrol engine (115hp and 175 Nm torque) or a 150hp 1.5 TSI (150hp and 250 Nm torque), both of which get manual and automatic options.
Autocar India’s buyer’s guide commentary for the Taigun states: “Volkswagen’s midsize SUV offers chic looks, a favourable interior and good build quality. The 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI turbo-petrol engines are punchy and the dynamics help increase appeal to keen drivers. As for negatives, space for five is tight, there are signs of cost-cutting and it misses some features.”
The VW Taigun, which aced the Global NCAP crash test with a five-star rating, comes equipped with six airbags as standard fitment.
A little over a year after its launch, the Volkswagen Taigun aced the Global NCAP crash test with a top five-star rating as did the Skoda Kushaq. Both SUVs achieved the highest 5-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection. The strong results affirmed the Skoda Auto Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 project strategy to build cars of European quality standards for the domestic and export markets. In June 2024, Volkswagen India further enhanced the Taigun’s safety quotient by making six airbags standard fitment in the midsize SUV.
Following the GST-driven prices cuts effective from September 22, 2025, the VW Taigun is now more affordable with price reductions of up to Rs 163,000 across its 13 variants. The base 1.0 TSI Highline AT variant’s ex-showroom prices stands reduced by Rs 48,000 to Rs 13.52 lakh. The top-end 1.5 TSI GT MT Plus Sport now costs Rs 17 lakh, cheaper by Rs 163,000.
