New Maruti Swift, Baleno recalled over brake issue

NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has announced a recall service campaign for its new Swift and Baleno models to inspect and fix a possible issue with the brake vacuum hose. Around 52,686 units of the car — which were manufactured between December 1, 2017, and March 16, 2018 — are said to be affected with the fault.

Service campaigns are undertaken globally by automobile companies to rectify faults that may potentially cause inconvenience to customers.

MSI will start contacting their customers through its dealer network from May 14 for replacement of the faulty part for free of cost. Customers of new Swift and Baleno are also requested to fill in the chassis number (MBH followed by a 14-digit alpha-numeric number) on a dedicated webpage ( click here to check). The chassis number is embossed on the vehicle ID plate and is also on the vehicle invoice and registration documents.

The brake vacuum hose is a part of the brake booster system which increases the brakeforce, helping the vehicle to stop at a shorter distance. So, the brakes of the affected vehicles will still work but the fault reduces the braking force significantly.

The new Maruti Suzuki Swift was launched in India in February this year at the Auto Expo 2018. The model is based on the lighter and more spacious Heartect platform which also underpins the Baleno which was launched in October 2015. Both the models are among the top-selling products in their respective segments.
