Mahindra & Mahindra, which has enjoyed a handsome run in the SUV market for the past two years and is set to register even better monthly numbers after the recent GST cut, sees yet another of its popular models surpass the 300,000 sales milestone in the domestic market.
The Mahindra Thar, first launched as a three-door model in October 2020 and joined by the five-door Thar Roxx four years later, has crossed the 300,000 mark.
Cumulative wholesales data of the Thar brand reveals that from October 2020 through the end of August 2025, the Thar and Thar Roxx together have sold 296,694 units. That’s just 3,306 units shy of the 300,000 mark which would have been achieved in the first week of September 2025.
By the end of August 2025, the Thar and the Thar Roxx have clocked sales of 296,694 units. The minuscule gap of 3,306 units to hit 300,000 units would have been bridged in the first week of September.
The Thar’s 300,000 sales milestone comes 60 months after the after the second-generation Thar was introduced. During this five-year period, Mahindra & Mahindra has sold an estimated 19,40,468 SUVs, which gives the two Thars a 15% share of the company’s sales since October 2020
The second-generation Thar in its three-door avatar won over buyers with its direct appeal to off-roading while also luring a large number of buyers with its new ability to be deployed as an everyday SUV as a result of its modern interior and features, relatively easy driving manners and also automatic transmission options.
The launch of the Thar Roxx – the five-door avatar of the Thar – on September 25, 2024 has helped further accelerate the Thar brand’s sales and also widen this SUV’s target audience, which now includes families, as a more practical and more mainstream product than the already popular three-door Thar and has also taken the battle into many a rival’s camp.
Surging demand for the Thar Roxx has seen it clock sales of 32,395 units in the first five months of FY2026, accounting for 68% of the Thar brand’s sales of 47,476 units
THAR ROXX: NEARLY 71,000 UNITS SOLD IN JUST 11 MONTHS
The Thar brand’s sales have risen at a robust pace right since launch five years ago and the Thar Roxx has accelerated the growth trajectory. FY2022 – the first year of 12-month sales – saw 37,844 Thars being sold. FY2023 (47,106 units) was a YoY increase of 24% and FY2024 (65,246 units) up 38% on that. FY2025 sales rose 30% YoY to a record 84,834 units, further empowered by the introduction of the Thar Roxx, the best-selling new SUV launched in FY2025.
The five-door Thar Roxx, which won Autocar India’s Car of the Year 2025 award, in just six months of launch (October 2024-March 2025) clocked wholesales of 38,590 units in FY2025 and accounted for a 45% share of the overall Thar brand sales of 84,834 units. The three-door Thar had a 55% share (46,244 units, down 29% YoY) in FY2025.
In FY2026’s first five months (April-August 2025), the Thar Roxx (32,395 units) has increased its share of Thar brand sales to 68% while that of the three-door Thar (15,081 units, down 39% YoY) has dropped to 32 percent. Clearly, while taking away some of its sibling’s sales, the Thar Roxx has also eaten into the competition and helped grow M&M’s UV market share.
Mahindra & Mahindra has sold 241,337 SUVs in the April-August 2025 period, up 15% YoY (April-August 2024: 209,148 units). The two Thars with 47,476 units have a 20% share of the sales and are the second best-selling model for the company after the Scorpio twins (66,262 units, 27% share), Bolero (40,422 units, 17% share), XUV 3XO (35,368 units, 15% share), XUV700 (31,454 units, 13% share), BE 6 and XEV 9e (18,895 units, 8% share), XUV400 (1,211 units, 0.5% share) and the Marazzo (249 units, 0.1% share).
It is learnt that M&M, which has clocked sales of 390,464 SUVs between January-August and will surpass the 600,000 annual sales milestone for the first time in a calendar year in 2025, has phased out the convertible top variants of the three-door Thar and also begun work on a facelifted model (codenamed W515) as a mid-cycle refresh for the five-year-old three-door Thar.
Meanwhile, following the recent GST price cut, the Thar Roxx’s ex-showroom prices have been slashed by up to Rs 133,000 with additional benefits of up to Rs 20,000 with a resultant starting price sticker of Rs 12.25 lakh through to Rs 22.06 lakh.
