ChargeZone has announced the launch of Project E-DHARA (Electrifying and Decarbonizing Highways through Accelerated Renewable Adoption), an initiative aimed at transitioning its entire charging infrastructure to 100 percent renewable energy sources.
The company, which currently operates over 13,500 charging points across India and the UAE, will begin the project with the commissioning of its first renewable-powered charging hub in Dahej, Gujarat, in 2025. The initiative addresses a significant challenge in India’s electric mobility sector: the reliance on fossil fuel-based electricity for charging infrastructure.
According to ChargeZone, approximately 75 percent of India’s current power generation comes from coal and other conventional sources, which limits the environmental benefits of electric vehicle adoption. Project E-DHARA seeks to address this gap by integrating solar power generation, battery energy storage systems, and high-speed charging infrastructure.
The Dahej facility will feature a 1 megawatt solar plant paired with a 5 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. The hub is designed to operate primarily off-grid, connecting to the conventional power grid only when necessary for energy security. This site will serve as a prototype for a larger national rollout.
ChargeZone plans to establish 100 renewable-powered charging hubs along key national highways by 2026. The infrastructure will support both passenger electric vehicles and electric freight trucks.
Kartikey Hariyani, Founder and CEO of ChargeZone, stated that the project represents a critical step toward achieving true decarbonization in the transportation sector. He emphasized that while electric vehicles eliminate tailpipe emissions, complete environmental benefits can only be realized when the charging infrastructure itself is powered by renewable energy.
The company is headquartered in Vadodara, Gujarat, and operates charging points at over 1,200 locations. ChargeZone has stated its long-term goal of establishing one million charging points across its network.
