
Motor vehicles department (MVD) booked 984 vehicles for various traffic violations in the district. The offences were detected during inspections conducted by central region deputy transport commissioner along with enforcement officers from Idukki, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts. The inspections began on Oct 25.
In Kochi, inspections were carried out by 14 squads across seven routes. The licence of a bus driver who was caught driving under the influence of alcohol was suspended for six months and the vehicle was taken into custody. In another incident at Vaduthala, where a student fell from a moving bus recently, the driver’s licence was also suspended for six months.
Action was also taken against around 400 autorickshaws that don’t have permits to operate here. Measures were taken against 15 bus drivers for reckless driving. Recommendations were made to the RTO board to take action on the permits of around 40 buses that were not operating their services as scheduled.
The licence of a bus driver who created traffic obstruction by driving the vehicle in the opposite direction was suspended for three months. Action was taken against a bus driver on the Muvattupuzha-Vannapuram via Kaliyar route after a passenger fell from the bus.
Numerous cases were taken in the backdrop of high court directive to take action against drivers who didn’t stop the vehicle at zebra crossings.
The enforcement RTO Biju Issac informed that action would be taken against drivers who create traffic obstructions by stopping buses in the middle of the road instead of at designated stops. He indicated that strict inspections would continue in the coming days also.>
