Japan’s Tsugami has inaugurated an assembly plant and foundry in Oragadam, Chennai, marking its first foundry in India and its largest investment in the country by a Japanese machine tool maker. The ₹300 crore project is one of the three Tsugami facilities worldwide, alongside Japan and China.

The 300,000 sq ft facility has an annual assembly capacity of 3,000 machines and a foundry capacity of 6,000 tonnes. Tsugami India expects the location to employ about 700 people directly and 300 through ecosystem roles.

Japan–India industrial ties

Kaoru Shiraishi, Director General of JETRO, said the project reflects long-term cooperation between Japan and India. He said the facility shows the results possible by combining Japanese technology with India’s workforce and market.

Arun Roy, Industries Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, said Japanese firms have maintained confidence in the state’s workforce and industrial environment. He said the facility is expected to add employment and support local suppliers.

K Balasubramaniam, Founder of Tsugami India, said the investment expands India’s precision-manufacturing capability and noted that the availability of skilled workers influenced the decision to locate the plant in Tamil Nadu.

Increased domestic production

The new plant enables domestic production of Tsugami machine tools, from raw material to finished machines. The company said the facility will support production scale while maintaining its quality standards.

Tsugami closed the financial year ending March 2025 with global revenue close to $700 million. Its product range includes CNC Swiss-type lathes, turning centres and grinding machines used across automotive, aerospace, medical and electronics sectors.
