Maruti Suzuki India Limited has achieved cumulative production of 35 lakh units of the WagonR across three generations since its launch in December 1999. The vehicle is currently manufactured at the company’s facilities in Gurugram and Manesar in Haryana, joining Alto and Swift as the only Maruti Suzuki models to cross this production milestone.
The WagonR has been India’s highest-selling car for the last four financial years, according to industry body SIAM reports. Globally, the Suzuki WagonR crossed 1 crore units in accumulated sales in August 2025 and is currently sold in more than 75 countries and regions, including Japan, India, and Europe.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “This achievement is not just a production milestone, but reflects the enduring love and confidence that generations of customers have shown towards brand WagonR. It is rare for a vehicle to receive such acceptance even after 25 years since its launch. The WagonR kept evolving with the introduction of new technology and features over time, while retaining its original DNA. The WagonR has been highly appreciated for aspects like its iconic tall-boy design, spacious interiors and fuel efficiency, which aptly reflect our customers’ needs and expectations. We are deeply grateful for their continued support and remain committed to providing ‘Joy of Mobility’ for generations to come.”
The Suzuki WagonR was first introduced in Japan in September 1993 as a semi-bonnet style mini wagon. The vehicle is manufactured across Japan, India, Hungary, and Indonesia.
The current generation WagonR is built on the 5th generation HEARTECT platform and comes equipped with 6 airbags as standard. Safety features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). The vehicle features a 17.78 cm (7-inch) SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice commands.
The Indian market WagonR has undergone multiple updates since its 1999 launch. The vehicle introduced a Duo LPG variant in 2004, launched its second generation in 2010, and added a CNG variant the same year. In 2015, the model was offered with Auto Gear Shift, dual airbags, and ABS. The third generation was introduced in 2019, with a minor model change implemented in 2022.
