New Delhi: More than one lakh Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates were issued in Delhi during a three-day enforcement drive between Dec 17 and 19, as authorities intensified action against polluting vehicles, Transport minister Pankaj Singh said on Saturday. During the same period, enforcement agencies issued over 12,200 challans for violations of pollution control norms.

According to the minister, 47,600 PUC certificates were issued on Dec 19 alone, indicating both stricter enforcement and improved public compliance amid the implementation of GRAP restrictions. “Pollution control cannot rely on symbolic measures. It requires long-term planning, expansion of clean mobility and strict enforcement,” Singh said.

Data shared by the transport department showed that Delhi Traffic Police and transport enforcement teams issued 3,752 challans on Dec 17, 4,132 on Dec 18 and 4,316 on Dec 19. In addition, enforcement teams at city borders issued 446 challans and prevented the entry of around 1,492 vehicles, which were turned back at various checkpoints.

To tighten compliance, Delhi govt has started round-the-clock PUC checks at fuel stations, with fuel being dispensed only to vehicles holding valid certificates.

Singh said Delhi is steadily expanding its electric public transport fleet. Since the formation of the current govt, 3,518 electric buses have been inducted, with a target of 5,000 e-buses by March 2026 and over 7,000 by Nov 2026. He also noted a sharp rise in electric vehicle adoption, with more than one lakh EVs registered in the past 10 months.
