Jaipur Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued notices to more than 2,000 vehicle owners in connection with an alleged scam involving the allocation of “vintage” seven-digit vehicle numbers to new vehicles.

The RTO will carry out a physical verification from Dec 24 to 26 of all relevant documents. Any discrepancies or false documents discovered will result in action being taken against vehicle owners.

Officials said the registration certificates of these vehicles have been kept under “not to be transacted” status on the VAHAN portal. Vehicles under this category cannot be sold or transferred, and any kind of services related to the transport department cannot be accessed by these vehicles.

“Over 90 vehicle number series of the seven-digit series have been put on hold. A three-day camp will be set up by RTO Jaipur (I) from Dec 24 to 26 for physical verification of documents of all suspected vehicles. Till the verification is completed, all these vehicle number series will be on hold for fair investigation,” said a senior official.

On Nov 25, the transport department instructed all regional offices and district offices to file FIRs against staff found to be involved in the vehicle number scam. This issue first surfaced in March when RTO Jaipur (I) discovered backlog transactions being recorded.
