Helmetless riders top ₹32cr traffic fines imposed this year

Traffic cops in the city issued over 21.1 lakh challans this year, up from 13.6 lakh in 2024. Helmetless riding, wrong-side driving, and speeding were the most common violations. Fines imposed amounted to ₹32 crore, with around 1,100 road accidents and 468 deaths reported. Manual challans accounted for 7 lakh, while camera-based enforcement on major expressways resulted in nearly 1 lakh e-challans.

Among the most common offences this year were pillion riders without helmets, which accounted for 4,38,972 such violators who were challaned. A total of 3,81,498 drivers without helmets were fined. Wrong-side driving resulted in 1,99,819 challans, while wrong parking accounted for 1,77,596 cases. Overspeeding continued to be a major concern, with 1,02,727 challans, followed by 75,280 cases of dangerous lane changing.

Driving without seatbelts was also widespread, with 66,840 drivers challaned for the violation. Police said 26,122 motorists were caught for drunken driving, 12,768 for jumping red lights, and 12,290 for using black film on vehicles. The use of mobile phones while driving led to 5,723 challans during the year.

With underage drivers continuing to flout traffic rules, the drive resulted in action against 150 underage drivers. In addition, 533 motorists were challaned for using red beacon lights, while 3,060 drivers were found using laser lights on their vehicles without permission, officials said. Technology-driven enforcement added substantially to the total.

Cameras installed on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway (NH-48) and the Dwarka Expressway issued 97,953 challans between July 10 and Dec 26 for violations including overspeeding, lane changes, no entry, triple riding, helmetless riding, seatbelt violations, and pollution-related offences. Overall, around seven lakh challans were issued manually, while the rest were generated through automated systems. The enforcement drive also resulted in over Rs 32 crore in challan revenue this year.

Rajesh Mohan, DCP, traffic, Gurgaon, said important traffic engineering improvements were carried out at Shankar Chowk with the assistance of the traffic engineering centre (TEC) team after extensive trials, including opening a cut on NH-48, streamlining the underpass, road marking, and installation of barricades to make traffic movement safer.

He added that at Rajeev Chowk, underpasses and road routes were repaired, wrong direction indicators were replaced with correct signage, and safety infrastructure such as rumble strips, bollards, jersey barriers, and plastic barriers was installed.

As part of visibility and safety measures to avoid road mishaps, around 10,000 reflective tapes were installed on tractor-trolleys, goods vehicles, bicycles, and rickshaws. Body-worn cameras were introduced to make the challan process more transparent, while meetings were held with doctors and ambulance drivers to ensure accident victims are taken immediately to the nearest hospital for first aid.

“Gurgaon is the first city in the country to establish coordination with the Google team, enabling motorists to receive traffic-related information and prescribed speed limits for 138 stretches here in real time,” the DCP said, adding that the country’s first challan payment KIOSK machine was installed at Ambience Mall to make payments easier for commuters.
