Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) announced that Tarun Garg has assumed the position of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, making him the first Indian national to lead the company since its establishment in 1996.
Garg, who has over 32 years of experience in the automotive sector, took charge on January 1, 2026. His appointment represents a shift in the company’s leadership structure, which has been managed by expatriate executives since operations began in India.
Prior to his appointment as MD & CEO, Garg served as Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer at HMIL. His earlier roles at the company included Head of Sales, Service, and Marketing. During his tenure in these positions, the company recorded three consecutive years of record sales and completed India’s largest initial public offering in 2024.
Before joining Hyundai, Garg held various positions at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, where he rose to the role of Executive Director of Marketing, Logistics, Parts, and Accessories.
Garg holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Delhi Technological University, formerly known as Delhi College of Engineering. He also completed an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow.
The company has outlined four areas of focus under the new leadership: development of electric vehicles, hybrids, and connected mobility through a planned investment of ₹45,000 crore by FY 2030; strengthening dealer and supplier networks; improving customer service delivery; and expanding manufacturing capabilities and export operations under the Make in India initiative.
Hyundai Motor India operates manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu and maintains its corporate office in Gurugram, Haryana. The company is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group and has been present in the Indian market since 1996.
