Electric vehicle (EV) retail sales in India grew 16.37 per cent year-on-year to 2,270,107 units in calendar year 2025, driven primarily by a sharp rise in electric passenger car sales, data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) showed on Wednesday.

Total EV retail sales in 2024 stood at 1,950,727 units.

FADA president CS Vigneshwar said calendar year 2025 marked a clear shift from pilot adoption to scale across segments. He noted that improving product availability and total cost of ownership benefits were driving adoption, particularly in two-wheelers, passenger vehicles and three-wheelers.

Performance across segments

Passenger electric vehicle retail volumes surged 77.04 per cent year-on-year to 176,817 units in 2025, up from 99,975 units in the previous year. As a result, EV penetration in the passenger vehicle segment increased to around 4.0 per cent, compared with 2.4 per cent in 2024.

Electric two-wheeler retail sales rose 11.36 per cent to 1,279,951 units during the year, compared with 1,149,416 units a year earlier, taking EV penetration in the segment to 6.3 per cent.

Electric three-wheeler retail volumes increased 15.39 per cent year-on-year to 797,733 units in 2025, with EVs now accounting for 60.9 per cent of total three-wheeler sales, highlighting strong adoption in the last-mile mobility segment.

Retail sales of electric commercial vehicles, though on a relatively low base, recorded strong growth of 54.2 per cent to 15,606 units, compared with 10,123 units in 2024. EV penetration in the commercial vehicle segment rose to 1.55 per cent during the year.

Vigneshwar added that sustained growth in EV adoption would require a coordinated push on charging infrastructure, policy continuity and faster, more inclusive retail financing to make electric mobility more mainstream across the country.
