New Delhi: To address the city’s chronic parking problem, Municipal Corporation of Delhi has prepared proposals for three multilevel parking projects, estimated to cost over ₹500 crore, and submitted them to Delhi govt.

One of the facilities has been planned at the old slaughterhouse site on Idgah Road in the City-Sadar Paharganj zone. The project will comprise a ground floor and three upper floors at an estimated cost of ₹346 crore, according to the proposal details accessed by TOI.

The second facility has been proposed at Rajendra Nagar and will include a basement, stilt and three floors, with an estimated cost of ₹76.6 crore. The other project is slated to come up at Shastri Park in Karol Bagh, with a similar configuration for ₹101.7 crore.

An MCD official said parking continued to be one of the city’s biggest civic challenges due to acute space constraints. “We can construct as many parking facilities as required, but the availability of land is the real issue. In many markets, there is no space nearby, and if parking is created at a distance, people are unwilling to park there and walk to the shops,” he pointed out.

Identifying areas with high parking demand along with vacant land is critical given Delhi’s rising vehicle population, the official added. “Careful identification of suitable sites is essential.”

The official said the detailed proposals were submitted to Delhi govt and work would begin after receiving approvals. A comprehensive detailed project report will be prepared for each site, covering design, capacity, feasibility and the construction model.

He also indicated that parking projects might be taken up at additional locations in the coming months. Construction work may begin soon for parking lots with capacities for 500 cars at Bank Street in Karol Bagh, 276 cars on Punjabi Bagh Club Road, 188 cars at Bharat Darshan Park in Punjabi Bagh, 577 cars at Shastri Park in Karol Bagh, 464 cars at Rajendra Nagar, 381 cars at Pusa Lane and 500 cars at Rani Bagh.

MCD operates 419 surface parking and 30 multilevel facilities. Construction works for an automated parking for 136 cars at DMRC’s Hauz Khas plot and another with a capacity of 246 cars at Central Market in Lajpat Nagar have been completed. Among the facilities already opened for the public include Andheria Mor (56 cars), Amar Colony in Lajpat Nagar (81), near Nizamuddin Basti (86), Gandhi Maidan in Chandni Chowk (2,338), Qutub Road (174) and Nigam Bodh Ghat (96).

Construction has also completed for a 225-car facility at Punjabi Bagh cremation ground and 399 cars at GK-I Market while the work is underway for a 196-car parking at Fatehpuri Market near Red Fort.
