The EX60 will be built on Volvo’s new SPA3 architecture, which is a generation beyond the full-size EX90. Besides its new infotainment software, the EX60 introduces lots of new technologies that help propel it to the top of the class in terms of range and efficiency. These include cell-to-body technology, which mounts the batteries directly into the chassis floor, reducing weight and complexity, and increasing the amount of space inside the cabin.
Volvo hasn’t confirmed the size of the battery pack, but says the all-wheel-drive – ie. dual-motor – EX60 will be capable of up to 502 miles on a charge. This just shades a BMW iX3’s 500 miles and the GLC’s 469-mile peak figure. Charging will also take a huge step forward with up to 400kW DC fast charging that the company says will be able to add 210 miles of range in just ten minutes.
Volvo has also given us more insight into what its new EV will look like, revealing a teaser image of the front that reveals slim headlights with the company’s classic Thor’s Hammer graphic. This adds to previous teasers which preview the SUV’s side profile.
The EX60’s overall proportions look similar to those of the current XC60, and as we previously revealed in our exclusive images, it will be a family-focused model that should yield plenty of space in the second row. Volvo is unlikely to offer third-row seating – this will be reserved for the larger EX90.
Volvo has also revealed images of the rear lights, giving us an insight into the tailgate design. Its main lighting unit is located low down on the car’s main body behind pronounced rear haunches, and features slim lighting elements with a tiny ‘Volvo’ script integrated inside. We can also see much bigger Volvo lettering across the tailgate and smooth surfacing, similar to that on the brand’s other electric cars.
Pricing and specifications are expected to be announced shortly after the reveal, and together with its German rivals, the EX60 will be part of one of the most hotly contested segments in the car world.
