Central govt may announce a scheme to curb air pollution in Delhi-NCR caused by old polluting vehicles and this may be a part of the budget announcements. There were a series of deliberations involving multiple ministries and Niti Aayog to give final shape to the scheme, people aware of the development said.

They added that the scheme would focus on phasing out of old polluting trucks and goods vehicles registered in Delhi-NCR with BS-IV ones, which are much cleaner that pre-BS, BS-I, II and III.

“Since this will have financial implications on the current owners of old vehicles, the scheme may offer some relief in the form of interest subsidy for buying a new vehicle and some discount by manufacturers. More incentives have also been proposed,” said a person aware about the plan. Similarly, old buses, both govt and private, will be converted to electric.>
