BMW calls back 12,000 diesel cars
BMW begins recalling about 12,000 diesel vehicles. In the models of the 5 and 7 series an illegal defeat device is installed. The manufacturer speaks of a technical breakdown.

BMW calls 11,700 diesel cars with inadequate exhaust gas purification in the workshop. The Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA) has approved the software update, the motorists have already been contacted, said a company spokesman on Friday in Munich.
The concerned BMW 5 Series and 7 Series With the current Euro 6 emissions standard, too much nitrogen oxide is emitted both on the road and on the test bench. According to BMW, their engines are controlled with software for SUV models. Group CEO Harald Krüger had at the Annual General Meeting of one handicraft glitch spoken. The KBA had the recall of the cars arranged because of an inadmissible shutdown device. The Munich public prosecutor’s office determined.
The official recall is a bitter setback for BMW. So far, the group had always complained about the role of Saubermann in the exhaust gas scandal. In fact, the manufacturer drove compared to the competition in many models a higher technical effort. BMW used storage catalytic converter systems and so-called SCR catalytic converters (AdBlue) in parallel to purify the exhaust gases from nitrogen oxide and in many cases also performed better in road tests than the vehicles of the competition.

Of course, the cars did not work properly with the wrong software. Had they had the correct software that did not require an SCR catalytic converter, then the vehicles would not have been traveling too poorly. One may of course ask why the software does not query as usual, all components and then outputs an error message. In the best case it would mean “SCR-Kat is broken, take me to the workshop”. In the worst case, the box does not even start anymore. Just as I understand it, BMW has made the 5 Series and 7 Series with the action unnecessarily worse, as they allegedly also keep the values.
