BMW calls 11,700 diesel cars with inadequate exhaust gas purification in the workshop. The Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA) has approved the software update, the motorists have already been contacted, said a company spokesman on Friday in Munich.

Had they had the correct software that did not require an SCR catalytic converter, then the vehicles would not have been traveling too poorly. One may of course ask why the software does not query as usual, all components and then outputs an error message. In the best case it would mean “SCR-Kat is broken, take me to the workshop”. In the worst case, the box does not even start anymore. Just as I understand it, BMW has made the 5 Series and 7 Series with the action unnecessarily worse, as they allegedly also keep the values.
