UGT denounces the destruction of 35,000 jobs due to the diesel crisis

The diesel crisis and the new WLTP emissions test have taken almost 35,000 jobs ahead in the whole of the automotive industry in Spain, as reported by the Federation of Industry of UGT (UGT FICA). The union urges the government to protect the sector to prevent further destruction of employment.

This is the first quantification made of the effects on the templates of the collapse of diesel vehicle sales and the entry into force of the new WLTP emissions controls. The quantification comes from a meeting held by union representatives in all the automotive factories of the country, which met yesterday with the sectoral responsible of UGT FICA, Jordi Carmona.

“This pressure on diesel, together with the new directive on homologations of engines, has meant so far the loss of about 35,000 jobs nationwide, so we demand a coherent and slow transition articulated around a Pact of State for the Industry that stops this bleeding of loss of employment in the sector “, affirms the union in a statement.

The bleeding in the job that UGT denounces is concrete in the suppression of some shifts of work in production plants and in the factories that supply them with components. For the union, it is urgent to put in place an industrial plan to face the future challenges of the sector and in which the social agents have an active participation.

In case this plan does not arrive to help the industry or that harmful measures are taken for the productive fabric, it will represent a “potential risk” for the more than two million direct and indirect jobs that the sector has in Spain. .

The union warns that “it does not rule out taking the actions it deems necessary to save the motor industry and its jobs.”
