SEOUL, Nov. 7 (Yonhap) — SK Lubricants Co., the world’s largest maker of high-quality Group III base oils by sales, said Wednesday that it has signed a deal to provide gear oil to Malaysian carmaker Proton, marking its first inroads into the Southeast Asian market.
SK Lubricants said it will supply ATF SP3 gear oil to Saga MC, a new model to be released in February by Proton, beginning in April next year for 32 months.
The deal covers 86,000 cars, with their gear oil needing to be replaced every six months, SK Lubricants said, without elaborating on the contract value.
SK Lubricants — wholly owned by South Korea’s top oil refiner SK Innovation Co. — said the deal will become a cornerstone in expanding its market presence in Malaysia.
China and Southeast Asia are growing lubricant markets that need more than 85 million barrels of lubricants a year.
