Hyundai’s technology allows the driver to unlock and start his vehicle without a car key. Hyundai builds the technology initially only in the SUV Santa Fe, which will be introduced in the first quarter of 2019.

To unlock the vehicle, the driver must place a finger on the sensor on the door handle. The encrypted fingerprint information is identified and transmitted to the controller in the vehicle. The driver can also start the engine simply by touching the starter button, which is also equipped with a fingerprint sensor.

With the help of the fingerprint vehicle settings can be personalized. The car combines the driver’s preferences with the fingerprint data and automatically adjusts the seat positions and the angles of the side mirrors according to the driver.

“In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further extend the application of the technology to allow for temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features tailored to the driver’s preferences,” said Albert Biermann, president and head of R & D from Hyundai.

Hyundai also addresses the safety issues of the technology. With capacity detection, which detects differences in current levels in different parts of the fingertip, counterfeiting and falsified fingerprints are discarded. The technology should be significantly safer than conventional car keys, including smart keys.

Hyundai wants to integrate the fingerprint scanner in other vehicles in the future. Which these are, the South Korean company has not yet revealed.

Jaguar Land Rover is already one step ahead. The company has a car door builtwhich automatically opens when the owner of the vehicle approaches. This not only means that the central door opens, but actually opens the door to board. The manufacturer has installed the technology on a trial basis in a Range Rover Sport. Motion sensors and a keyless entry system are used. The driver is not only detected by radio, but the system also registers when approaching the car.
