A separate power grid and no polluting power plants: The US company Tesla wants to build a self-sufficient power supply in Greek islands. The power supply should be done with regenerative energies, the electricity stored in large batteries. This is to make the islands independent of a power supply by burning fossil fuels.

Tesla is negotiating with the Greek Ministry of Energy about the construction of such micro-grids on different islands. On the island of Tilos off the Turkish coast, a power grid with wind and solar power plants is already being set up with the help of the European Union. The Greek government would like to start another project on Lemnos, a larger island.

The government in Athens wants to phase out energy supplies based on fossil fuels and switch to renewable sources such as wind or solar energy, it says in a statement from the government, Since wind and sun were not available for planning, storage systems were indispensable.

Tesla builds network storage

Tesla supplies such storage solutions: large lithium-ion battery modules, called power packs. They have a storage capacity of 210 kilowatt hours each and are put together to form large grid memories. Tesla has already built several such network storage, in California for example and in Belgium,

One of the largest of these stores is in the Australian state of South Australia and is connected to a nearby wind power plant. He has already helped to intercept the failure of a coal power station,

Tesla combines the network storage with a solar power plant and thus builds a self-sufficient electrical system. Tesla’s first micro grid is since 2016 on Ta’ū in operation, an island in the Pacific, which belongs to the American outer area American Samoa. Another supplied since 2017 the Hawaii island Kauai, Tesla supplies both the batteries and the solar cells, the the company acquired in 2016 Solar City manufactures.
