Danger for the passenger: Tesla is affected by defective airbags of the Japanese company Takata. The company therefore recalls older Model S. Other manufacturers have hit harder.

The Japanese supplier’s airbag uses a propellant that can destroy the airbag. This can result in serious or even fatal injuries. Certain factors, such as age, contribute to the defect occurring, Tesla writes on his website,

Affected are Model S, which were built in the years 2014 to 2016 – in China calls Tesla according to the State Administration For Market Regulation, the Chinese Supreme Competition Authority, 14,223 vehicles back. Owners of Model S built later and owners of a Tesla Roadster, Model X or Model 3 will not be eligible for the recall.

Other manufacturers have installed the airbags from Takata in their cars, including Ford and Toyota. The Japanese manufacturer has already recalled over 1.5 million vehicles. A total of around 37 million cars are equipped with Takata airbags, writes the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Takata took over the German company Petri in 2000, which developed the first airbag in the 1980s. Takata filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and was taken over the following year by the US company Key Safety Systems, which then renamed the Joyson Safety System.
