BMW relies on VR and AR in production

In production, BMW is increasingly focusing on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

The graphic representations of AR and VR are getting better and better BMW says it’s hard to tell from reality. The impressions are made via glasses or via tablets, which makes them suitable for production or quality control.

Virtual reality is used primarily in the planning of buildings, facilities and logistics. Whole processes can be displayed in 3D. The foundation for this is digital factory data, which BMW captures using 3D scanners and HD cameras. In addition, data from VR libraries are used to complete the picture.

Employees are already familiarized with the handling of the technology at BMW. Meanwhile, the AR goggles help to visualize the work steps, making them easier to imitate. In this way, the specialist personnel can be trained quickly in production. Interested parties can join in the course of the year.

The new technologies are also used in quality control. Thus, a tablet can be used on a tripod with AR application to check the correctness of the product. If there has been a slight deviation, can be improved. Only then does the part continue into assembly.

This makes production easier and faster and also saves you a lot of money. The visualization by data processing takes only a few seconds, because a computer program computes the compatibility.
