Alameda, StuttgartThe automaker Daimler participates in a US specialist in battery materials. Daimler have led the new round of financing by Sila Nano Technologies, in which the start-up could collect 170 million US dollars (about 150 million euros), said the US-based company based in Alameda, California on Tuesday.

How much money comes from Daimler, is not known. However, according to its own statements, the car company acquired a minority stake in the start-up and secured a seat on the board of directors. Besides Daimler also participated Siemens to Nano Technologies. Overall, the start-up has now collected in several rounds $ 295 million from investors.

According to the company, Sila Technologies material outperforms conventional lithium-ion technology in energy density. It replaces conventional graphite electrodes with composites in which silicon dominates. This allows the development of more powerful batteries for electric cars.

The advantage: Daimler needs neither a new battery technology, nor new production facilities. On a large scale, the batteries could be produced with the new technology but only in the middle of the next decade, said a Daimler spokesman.
