General Motors (GM) has filed for a trademark for a vehicle named ‘Bolt EUV’ – hinting at a new electric car based on the Chevy Bolt EV platform.
On October 2, 2017, GM outlined its “All-Electric Path to Zero Emissions” and announced a new electric offensive with 20 new all-electric vehicles to launch by 2023.
The automaker also, in particular, promised to launch 2 new electric cars based on the Bolt EV within the next 18 months:
“In the next 18 months, GM will introduce two new all-electric vehicles based off learnings from the Chevrolet Bolt EV.”
As we reported earlier this month, it has now been 18 months and we have yet to see those new electric vehicles.
GM disagreed with our report and claimed that they already released those two vehicles: the Buick Velite 6 EV and Baojun E200, two China-only vehicles produced by joint-venture partnerships in China.
A few days after the report came out, GM filed for a new trademark for a vehicle called ‘Bolt EUV’ (via GM Authority):
Electrek’s Take
As I stated in my previous report about the missing two EVs, it made no sense that GM would consider the Buick Velite 6 EV and Baojun E200 as the two new Bolt EV-based electric vehicles that they were supposed to launch.
It would be kind of funny if GM used those two vehicles to make it look like they respected their timeline and then launch an actual new Bolt EV-based electric car as initially intended.
Either way, I am just happy that we are starting to see evidence that they are still working on those vehicles.
As for what the name tells us, I would assume that ‘EUV’ stands for ‘Electric Utility Vehicle’. Now what that would look like is up for debate.
I would assume something a little bigger than the Chevy Bolt EV. Maybe a little more in the shape of a SUV or crossover than the Bolt EV, which kind of looks like a compact car at some angles.
When announcing plans to release an autonomous Bolt EV without steering wheel or pedal, GM released this image:
Considering they are talking about “entries by 2020”, I would assume that it is a good indication of what that Bolt EUV could look like.
