MEERUT: Meerut regional transport authorities have issued instructions to all dealers in Meerut to ensure that high security registration plates are installed in all new vehicles purchased by the locals here. The step was taken following a directive by the road transport ministry.
These number plates cannot be tampered with or removed as each has a special lock system in place. Instructions have also been given to link them with GPS.
Vijay Kumar, Meerut regional transport officer, said, “This is a mandatory step taken across the country. In this backdrop, all vehicle dealers have been instructed to make sure that all new vehicles being purchased should have high security registration plates. These plates are to be provided by the manufacturer of the vehicle to the dealer via the vendor.”
The registration plate will be made of aluminium and have unique features with a nine-digit code. This code will help trace any history of challans on this vehicle number. It will also have a built-in GPS system.
“This step will also prevent tampering with number plates as some vehicle owners to make designs to create a fancy number plate – which cannot be done now. It has a lock of sorts and if an attempt is made to break it, it will also remove the chassis number. It will have a hot stamp chromium based hologram logo and will be printed on a superior grade reflective sheet. The price of the plates will be included in the cost of the vehicle, but its cost separately is Rs 334 for four wheelers and Rs 111 for two wheelers,” said Kumar.
Meanwhile, instructions are awaited from the higher-ups on how to install these new number plates on old vehicles.
