Mobike Hires Tesla’s Former General Manager As CMO

China’s bike sharing company Mobike has hired Kingston Chang, former Tesla Motors Inc.’s general manager in China as chief marketing officer, according to Chinese media.

Chang will be responsible for the marketing of Mobike and report directly to Mobike’s founder Hu Weiwei.

Prior to Mobike, Chang was the first general manager in China at Tesla Motors Inc. and left the company in 2014. He graduated from Chinese University of Hong Kong graduate school, and worked for several companies in the automotive industry including Volkswagen AG’s Bentley, London-based automotive retail Inchcape Plc and Hong Kong-based Jebsen Group.

Shanghai-based Mobike began trial operations in Shanghai at the end of 2015, and has rapidly expanded to over 21 cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

The celebrity start-up has raised massive amount of venture funding from high profile investors in a short period of time, with an undisclosed strategic investment from Foxconn Technology Group just completed Last month, as well as a US$215 million series D round from Tencent and Warburg Pincus completed two weeks prior.

Before that, it raised a US$00 million series C round led by Hillhouse last October. Two months before that in August, it raised a US$10 million series B round led by Panda Capital.
