Uncertain battery: The Chinese electric car manufacturer Nio has recalled just under 5,000 of its ES8 electric cars. The reason is a battery failure that can lead to a fire. Nio wants to replace the batteries.

According to a notice (translation), the Chinese Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has encountered an assembly error with a particular battery pack. Thus, a cable may have been crushed during installation, thereby damaging the insulation. In the worst case, it could therefore come to a battery edge, writes the SAMR.
The recall affected 4,803 vehicles manufactured between April and October last year. This is more than a quarter of the previously sold ES8: By the end of May, Nio had delivered 17,550 cars of this type. The manufacturer wants to replace the offending batteries with new ones.
That should not be very difficult: Nio has equipped the ES8 with a removable battery. Replacing an empty battery is faster than charging an empty battery, which is especially useful for long distance driving. Nio therefore builds one Infrastructure with exchange stations on the highways from Beijing to Shanghai and from Beijing to Shenzhen.
The Nio ES8 is an electric SUV that can accommodate seven passengers. The car has a 480 kilowatt electric motor and a battery with a capacity of 70 kilowatt hours. The range is about 500 kilometers. The car is built since a year ago, and is initially available only in China.
