At the end of June, the next large section was completed: In total, almost 2,000 old high-bay luminaires and around 20 old outdoor luminaires have been replaced by more than a thousand new LED luminaires. “This exchange was necessary in order to be able to save on lighting costs in the future,” explains Roman Szegner / Environment and Energy Manager.

LED luminaires save more than 70 percent compared to conventional lamps. This is made possible by the combination of daylight and motion sensors as well as the high efficiency of the luminaires. The investment already pays for itself within two years.

Modern technology saves energy

Because LED luminaires have a much higher luminous efficacy than conventional luminaires, only a smaller number of luminaires had to be reinstalled. Not only better light, but also more economical light is possible with the help of LEDs: Each of the lights has an integrated motion sensor as well as a daylight sensor and an infrared receiver for parameterisation. Thus, the luminaire adapts automatically to the external lighting conditions. That saves energy, of course. Quite apart from the fact that LED lights (which use light emitting diodes to generate light) are already more energy efficient than other lights.

Additional – cost-saving – advantage in the LED lights: The maintenance effort is extremely low. On average, LED luminaires have a service life of more than 50,000 operating hours, which can be extended even more by partial load operation (dimming). The daylight sensor does the dimming automatically.

In-house

In the fall of 2017, the LED lighting project started: with the installation of 500 LED luminaires in parts of the F 17 transmission construction and in the hardening shop. From March to June of this year, the next approximately 500 LED lights in the area of six-speed gearbox production were implemented and from April to May the LED outdoor lights were installed. At the end of June 2019, the Aspern plant can proudly say that the lighting has largely been switched to energy-saving – and therefore environmentally friendly – LED lights.

The dismantling of the old luminaires and installation of the new LED luminaires was almost entirely self-directed: by the electricians of the Technical Management / TM department.
