Volkswagen revives its famous electric combi

Determined to take full advantage the turning of the electric , Volkswagen takes the opportunity to resurrect one of its most iconic vehicles. On Tuesday, July 2, the German manufacturer presented a 100% electric version of its famous 60s combi. Designed by its US research and development center, this van is supposed to highlight the latest advances of the German car firm.

Because despite its retro look, this “concept car” called “Type 20” is primarily a concentrate of technology. This new generation combi includes, for example, a real-time face recognition system that can identify users and unlock (or not) the doors accordingly.

Battery light

All accompanied by a voice assistant able to assist passengers inside and outside the vehicle. In the cabin, a holographic entertainment system based on 3D is also planned.

On the other hand, for the motorization, the German firm decided to make light with a battery of 10 kWh, ten times less powerful than those which one finds on a Tesla, and an on-board charger of 2,500 W.

For the materials of the cabin, Volkswagen has also wanted to highlight its innovations, with the latest generation materials that are distinguished by increased strength despite reduced weight.

Towards the autonomous vehicle

Expected to celebrate the 20 years of Volkswagen’s research and development center in Silicon Valley, the “Type 20” will be on display in the California premises of the German group.

A priori, there is no question for the moment to market this vehicle “concept”, the objective is mainly to promote the advances of the manufacturer to the electric and the autonomous vehicle.

“The future of the Volkswagen Group will depend on our success in developing new technologies designed to meet the needs of our customers,” said Scott Keogh, CEO of Volkswagen America.

“As we roll out the next generation of electric and autonomous vehicles, innovation will increasingly determine who we are,” he added. A way to definitely turn the page of the “dieselgate” scandal .
