Completed areas such as mines or large construction sites are a good test site for autonomous vehicles. The Norwegian company Brønnøy Kalk wants mined limestone from autonomous moving trucks to let. These are conventional trucks that have just been converted accordingly. Scania goes a step further: the vehicle of the Swedish Volkswagen subsidiary will not have a cab.

The Scania AXL is a dump truck that can be used, for example, in gravel pits. Since he will be traveling in a defined area, the dump truck can do without a driver. Controlled and monitored is from a control center. The software communicates with the whole system and can send the dump truck to where it is needed.

Consequently, the vehicle has no cab. In its place is the so-called intelligent front module. For navigation and obstacle detection, they have equipped the vans with the GPS satellite navigation system as well as radar, lidar and cameras.

Scania already uses self-driving trucks on the road. But there is always a driver on board who can intervene if necessary. However, AXL’s control system is not yet good enough to send the vehicle onto the road, said Magnus Granström, Development Engineer at Scania. For use in a mine but it was smart enough. “Driving in a mine is pretty easy and predictable, so working in a more dynamic and less predictable environment requires more work.”

The Scania AXL is powered – unlike the in Switzerland rebuilt heavy duty dump truck from Komatsu – from an internal combustion engine. But if possible, it should be powered by biofuel from renewable sources.

Scania wants to present the prototype of the AXL on 2 October 2019 in Södertälje.
