New Delhi: The city of Los Angeles has installed electric vehicle chargers directly to more than 130 streetlight poles and planning to add 100 more, claims a media report.
Such EV charging solution has been already adopted in Europe, but in the US this is first such instance. The installation of streetlight pole-mounted EV chargers is aimed at those consumers who can not charge the vehicles at home.
The users of these EV chargers have to pay $1 to $2 per hour, while parking the vehicle is free of cost.
As the media report claims, A mayor Eric Garcetti’s Green New Deal is aiming to have at least 100,000 new zero-emission vehicles in the city by 2025.
Commenting on the initiative, Norma Isahakian, director of the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting, said, “When the city decided that one of their priorities was to encourage the purchase of EV vehicles, it seemed prudent that it would be best to attach EV charging stations to our light poles.”
The companies like ChargePoint, EVGo, Flo, and GreenLots are operating these EV charging stations, claims the report. It further says LA administration is aiming to increase the EV percentage in the city to 25 per cent of the total fleet by 2025, 80 per cent by 2035, and 100 per cent by 2050.
