Rio Tinto invests in autonomous driving

Mine operator Rio Tinto is investing millions in autonomous driving.

Rio Tinto has long used Autonomous trucksthat removes debris from ore mining operations on the premises.

Now they want to strengthen this concept and invested one million Australian dollars, which is approximately $ 749,000, in the operation of the subsidiary Greater Tom Price. So should the capacity of production in Pilbara in Australia be maintained, as it facilitates the mining in a mine.

The money goes into the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and into the autonomous trucks. These should also be used in the mine WTS2. The use of trucks increases safety, productivity and lowers operating costs, according to the operator.

Therefore, half of the vehicles are already automated and one considers to increase the fleet in the next few years. This is accompanied by a training of the employees.
