The company will be developing the compact SUV, Skoda Vision In, on the MQB platform. MQB stands for Modularer Querbaukasten. It lays down a series of hard points for a huge range of cars and powertrains. These hard points determine the common design of production line.
“The Skoda Vision In is the first vehicle to be based on the new localised sub-compact platform of the MQB A0 IN, which also forms the inter-brand basis of various Skoda and Volkswagen models,” the company said in a statement.
Skoda Auto India joined hands with Volkswagen (VW) India last year to increase the combined market share of the company’s products in the domestic market, where it sells less than two in a 100 new cars. The companies have earmarked an investment of Rs 8,000 crore (1 billion euros) to capture share in the Indian market.
The Pune plant, where only VW India vehicles were mainly produced, is scheduled for a makeover where new products planned on the platform for the Indian market will be made. Towards this end, the company has internally announced about two months of plant shut-down and non-production days, spread through 2020.
