General Motors is hiring about 1,200 people at its plants in Lansing.
GM said the manufacturing jobs will be added to help it launch two new Cadillac sedans, the CT4 and the CT5, as well as meet customer demand for some midsize SUVs.
Lansing Grand River Assembly will hire about 400 workers when it adds a second shift for its general assembly line. That will support the launch of the CT4 and CT5 sedans built there.
Lansing Delta Township Assembly will add a third shift to help build the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave SUVs assembled there. About 800 employees will be added there, GM said.
“Our team members have proven experience in building high-quality vehicles and are well-prepared to meet the needs of our customers,” said Phil Kienle, vice president, GM North American Manufacturing and Labor Relations. “This is great news for our manufacturing sites as well as the Lansing community.”
The UAW, which represents the hourly workers at both plants, said it is “proud” that 1,200 more jobs will be added to the facilities.
“Every day, UAW members, under the teamwork of Region 1D Director Steve Dawes and local leadership, help bring quality and focus to making our customers proud and selling some of the finest vehicles made in the world,” said UAW’s Terry Dittes, vice president of GM department. “We look forward to many more years of success in Lansing.”
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement commending GM’s news.
“Everyone knows the best vehicles on the road are made by the industry’s best workforce right here in Michigan. From the $300 million investment in the Orion Assembly plant to the $2.2 billion in the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, we are excited about the future of manufacturing in Michigan,” Whitmer said. “We are making strides every single day to cement Michigan’s status as a world leader in mobility, and we will continue to work with our partners to keep our foot on the gas.”
Both shift additions will be operational in the second quarter, GM said.
GM’s Lansing Delta Township plant opened in 2006 and has built about 3 million vehicles since. It’s GM’s newest plant in the United States, with about 2,500 hourly employees.
Lansing Grand River Assembly is GM’s second-newest U.S. assembly plant, where it builds the Chevrolet Camaro, CT5 and CT4 carVs. It has about 1,400 hourly workers on staff.
