BMW in Dingolfing: autonomous and networked logistics

A BMW production site is networked and automated.

The BWM manufacturing site in Dingolfing is now automated and networked. The project for this started in 2019.

The research project “Autonomous and Connected Logistics” was officially started in September last year. It was to last over three years and is now entering the practical phase. The project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economics and has other partners Bavaria: m3connect, Stäubli WFT and research institutions.

The goal is to make the production site smarter. So some became Measures takenthat can be subsumed under Industry 4.0. Now it’s all about automated transport systems, robotics and networking. The implementation should be tested extensively.

The BMW production network started several logistics solutions independently of one another and won the German Logistics Award in 2019. The research project is now being continued to enable networking between the logistics solutions. The manufacturer is investing around 4.8 million euros in this.

Networking, and this is also a test procedure, is used 5G technology. This means that large amounts of data can be transmitted with low latency. In the long term, all production locations want to be equipped with the standard.
