UAW asks Detroit automakers to shutter U.S. plants -source

DETROIT, March 18 (Reuters) – The union representing about 150,000 hourly workers at the Detroit Three automaker has asked the companies to reconsider shutting down their U.S. plants to stop the spread of the coronavirus, a person familiar with the union’s request said on Wednesday.

The United Auto Workers asked for another meeting on Wednesday with General Motors Co, Ford Motor Co and Fiat Chrysler Autombiles NV (FCA) a day after the sides agreed to slow production at U.S. plants and limit the number of workers on the job at one time to prevent the spread of the virus, said the source who asked not to be identified.
