Japanese-German research cooperation for autonomous driving

A cooperation from Germany and Japan is dedicated to the study of autonomous and connected driving.

In collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), of the RWTH Aachen, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the manufacturer BMW, of the TU Munich, of the Chemnitz University of Technology, of the TU Dresden, of the Ulm University, the University of Tokyo, Kagawa University, Doshisha University, Nagoya University, Nanzan University, and the University of Tsukuba and other research institutes, the CADJapanGermany project is investigating autonomous driving with regard to HMI (Human-machine interface) and the spread of technology.

So you have both the technical side and the social science side in view. The project name CADJapanGermany stands for the countries and the abbreviation for Connected and Automated Driving. In addition to the stated goals, the project should also contribute to the acceptance of technology to increase. One wants to achieve this with a social dialogue.

At the HMI, research is carried out on interfaces for human-machine communication based on Light strips, light lamps and text. Movement as a means of communication is also analyzed. An example of this is a delayed arrival at a crossing, so that, for example, pedestrian traffic can happen.

It also examines non-verbal and informal communication, from which requirements for technology and its design can be derived. The researchers can use vehicles, simulations and test fields to check the theses.

The spread and marketing of the technology is also calculated using simulations. You also vary the use of Private vehicles and the shared economy, i.e. autonomous driving as a business model. These findings serve the future assessment of traffic and forecasts about the development of industry.

About David Fluhr

I have been writing about autonomous & connected driving since 2011 and also report on other sites, such as the Smart Mobility Hub. I studied social sciences at the HU Berlin and have been an independent journalist since 2012. Contact: mail@autonomes-fahren.de
