Battle of lobbies around European objectives to reduce CO2 emissions in the automobile

“Now is not the time to go back on Europe’s basic emission rules”, insist several civil society organizations and large groups – such as the Swedish giant Ikea or the multinational Unilever – in a letter sent on Thursday 16 April to the European Commission.

The 14 co-signers say they are “very concerned” about the automotive sector’s call to relax two European regulations. One, which came into force on January 1, 2020, applies to cars and vans. The other, adopted last June by the 27, applies to buses and heavy goods vehicles. Both are forcing manufacturers to cut vehicle emissions by 15% by 2025, and more than 30% by 2030.
