7 Series: BMW wants to suspend the production of its flagship in the gasoline version in Europe but also the other models temporarily

In view of future new rules in fuel consumption and emissions tests, BMW decides to take an unusual step. The car manufacturer interrupts the production of several gasoline models. The flagship BMW 7 Series takes the group even for a year from the offer.

BMW Show stock market chart temporarily stops the production of several petrol-engined car models for the European market in order to gradually prepare them for the new EU consumption measurements close to everyday life. The flagship, the BMW 7 series, will even be taken out of the offer for a year as a gasoline engine in Europe, said a BMW spokesman on Monday in Munich. The “Automobilwoche” had previously reported about it.

The new WLTP test cycle will be binding for all new cars in September, and from September 2019 realistic road-load tests (RDE) will become mandatory for all new vehicles. In order to meet the specifications and install particulate filters in the gasoline engines, BMW is interrupting the production of several models for the EU market for a few weeks or even months.

Demand is likely to temporarily shift to other engines, models and markets – diesel engines and sales in Asia and America are not affected, the spokesman said. “We do not expect any impact on the volume sold.”

BMW had sold the 7 Series with petrol engines 3540 times in Europe last year. Of these, 1413 cars were a hybrid car, so a vehicle with gasoline and electric motor. The latter are not affected by the production stop, informed a spokesman on request of manager-magazin.de further. Worldwide, the model found about 64,000 buyers last year. The share of all gasoline engines at BMW in 2017 was 39 percent, that was almost 400,000 cars.

VW Chief Financial Officer Frank Witter had told analysts in Berlin last week that the new WLTP test cycle could lead to “a temporarily limited product offering”.
