The refreshed CR-V range, featuring Honda’s advanced hybrid technology as standard for the first time, receives new e:HEV nomenclature to align with the all-new Jazz e:HEV in the brand’s e:TECHNOLOGY vehicle line-up. Honda is also enhancing the appeal of its 2021 CR-V line-up with the addition of a new Sport Line grade, offering a sporty and sophisticated styling choice.

The addition of the CR-V to the e:HEV family follows the launch of the new Jazz e:HEV and Honda e, and contributes towards Honda’s commitment to electrify 100% of its European line-up by 2022. In addition to the new e:HEV branding, CR-V models are also fitted with a blue-outlined Honda badge, highlighting their low-emissions credentials.

The CR-V e:HEV features Honda’s responsive and highly efficient advanced hybrid powertrain technology, first introduced to the CR-V in 2019. The Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) technology comprises two electric motors, an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, an innovative transmission and three intelligent driving modes, delivering high levels of real-world efficiency and refinement. It is available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) layouts.

The new Sport Line grade is introduced alongside several updates to all variants of the fifth-generation CR-V. Interior trim is updated with a lustrous silver finish applied to elements on the centre console, doors cards and dashboard accents. Other updates include a new 18” alloy wheel design for all grades and privacy glass for [SE OR ELEGANCE] models. Wireless smartphone charging is added to top grade [EX OR EXECUTIVE] models.

The new Sport Line grade – available with a choice of two paint finishes, Crystal Black Pearl or Platinum White Pearl – incorporates darkened style accents to broaden the appeal of the CR-V e:HEV. These accents include the headlight trim, door mirrors and dark chrome garnishes, with a black finish also applied to the alloy wheels and wheel nuts.

The CR-V retains its sophisticated exterior design with broad, muscular wheel arches, sharp contours on the bonnet and rear quarters, as well as the Honda family ‘face’ with its signature headlight graphic.

The refreshed model continues to benefit from best-in-class space efficiency, with generous space for all occupants, as well as a wide, deep boot with a long load bay. A hands-free power tailgate also enables convenient loading access on certain grades.

Clever features make the CR-V easy to use every day. For example, the height of the tailgate when opened can be programmed to avoid contact with low ceilings, while cabin flexibility is boosted by a three-mode centre-console storage, and a single-action ‘dive down’ 60:40 split-fold second-row seat backs that enable fast, easy loading.

The platform design incorporates Honda’s exclusive next-generation ACE™ (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, which employs a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly. In addition, Honda Sensing™ is standard across the range, among the most comprehensive suites of active safety and driver-assistive technologies in the class, combining radar and camera information to assist the driver.

The addition of a new Sport Line variant gives customers the ability to benefit from the spaciousness and practicality of CR-V, while choosing a more sporty style. Upgrades to the interior improve the refined and premium feel of the CR-V.

At the front, the bold design integrates the latest Honda family ‘face’, including the solid wing graphic and signature headlight shape, with LED illumination as standard. A sculpted front bumper is complemented by the body’s clean surfacing, and framed by a slim grille in the front valance.

The rear haunches are heavily contoured compared to the third generation CR-V, complemented by wider arches over all four wheels. Its dynamic appearance is enhanced by robust looking lower body cladding, highlighted with lustrous metallic trim, which connects the front and rear wheels.

The new Sport Line grade is available in a choice of two paint finishes, Crystal Black Pearl or Platinum White Pearl. It also incorporates dark style accents, for the headlight trim and door mirrors, while a black finish is also applied to the alloy wheels and wheel nuts.

Sport Line models are further distinguished by a dark chrome finish around the fog lights and on the grille with accompanying accents on the bumper, door and  tailgate. Privacy glass is included as standard for both FWD and AWD Sport Line variants, to complement the sophisticated look.

On all other variants, customers can choose from eight exterior colours: solid Rallye Red, metallic Lunar Silver, Modern Steel, Cosmic Blue, and Premium Crystal Red, and pearlescent Platinum White, Crystal Black and Premium Agate Brown.

The 2020 Honda CR-V e:HEV is available exclusively with advanced hybrid powertrain technology. The Honda Hybrid Performance system, first introduced to the CR-V in 2019, is enabled by Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) technology. It comprises two electric motors, a power control unit, an Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, lithium-ion battery and an innovative fixed gear transmission, delivering high levels of refinement, responsiveness and efficiency.

The CR-V e:HEV is equipped with an efficient 2.0-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, with peak power of 107 kW (145 PS) at 6,200 rpm, and a powerful 135 kW (184 PS) electric motor with a 315 Nm (232 lb ft) torque output. The petrol-electric powertrain can propel the CR-V e:HEV from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds in FWD specification, and from 8.9 seconds for the AWD model, with a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph).

Its fuel-efficient hybrid system produces CO2 emissions from 151g/km (WLTP combined cycle) and fuel economy of 6.6l/100km (WLTP combined cycle) on front-wheel drive models, and CO2 emissions from 161g/km (WLTP combined cycle) and fuel economy of 7.1l/100km (WLTP combined cycle) on all-wheel drive models.

Intelligent driving modes

Honda’s unique i-MMD technology is so-named as it intelligently and automatically switches between three driving modes to provide the highest possible efficiency when driving. These modes comprise: EV Drive, where the lithium-ion battery supplies power to the electric propulsion motor directly; Hybrid Drive, where the engine supplies power to an electric generator motor, in turn supplying power to the electric propulsion motor; and Engine Drive, where the engine is connected directly to the wheels via a lock-up clutch.

In most urban driving situations, the CR-V e:HEV will shift seamlessly between Hybrid Drive and EV Drive for optimum efficiency. In Hybrid Drive, excess power from the engine can be diverted to recharge the battery via the generator motor. EV Drive permits pure-electric propulsion and a zero-emissions range of around 2 km (1.2 miles) depending on driving conditions and the battery’s state of charge. Engine Drive is the most efficient mode for cruising at higher speeds and can be supplemented by an on-demand power ‘boost’ from the electric propulsion motor to supplement engine torque under certain conditions.

The i-MMD system decides when to shift between modes to maximise efficiency, without disturbing the driver or requiring proactive input from them.

The 2.0-litre engine, propulsion motor, generator motor and power control unit are located under the bonnet; the lithium-ion battery pack is beneath the boot.

Innovative fixed-gear transmission

Rather than using a conventional transmission, a single fixed-gear ratio creates a direct connection between moving components, resulting in a smoother transfer of torque. This format means Honda’s system is more compact than a planetary eCVT typically found in other hybrid vehicles, as well as being more refined.

Engineers on the CR-V e:HEV programme have sought to ensure that the transfer between power sources – including the engine stop-start function – is virtually imperceptible to occupants. The smooth transfer of torque means there is no driveline shunt or undesirable feedback through the pedals or steering wheel, meaning the car boasts outstanding noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) management.

Deceleration Paddle Selector system

The CR-V e:HEV is equipped with a Deceleration Paddle Selector system, allowing the driver to use paddles behind the steering wheel to adjust the car’s rate of regenerative braking when they lift off the throttle.

A single chevron symbol displayed on the 7-inch Driver Information Interface (DII) denotes the default rate of deceleration. The number of chevrons increases in line with the chosen rate of deceleration, up to a maximum of four.

By pulling back the paddle on the left side of the steering wheel (indicated by a minus symbol), the driver can increase the rate of deceleration – and the rate at which energy is harvested for the powertrain. By pulling back the paddle on the right side of the steering wheel (with a plus symbol), the driver can decrease the rate of deceleration, slowing down the car more gently.

In normal driving, manual adjustment to the rate of deceleration is temporary, and will automatically cancel when driving at a constant speed or accelerating. In Sport mode, the manually-selected rate of deceleration will be held until it is cancelled by the driver.

The lightweight and rigid construction benefits from a low centre of gravity, with sophisticated front and rear suspension systems, control technologies, and variable-ratio steering. Honda’s ‘Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™’, together with raised ground clearance, gives the CR-V e:HEV genuine all-terrain capability.

The body is made of lightweight, high-tensile materials, providing a low-inertia and highly rigid platform. In the early stages of development for the CR-V’s current platform, Honda incorporated ultra-high strength hot-stamped steel into its design, increasing strength and reducing the overall weight of the body.

Advanced unibody technology
Superior materials and sophisticated engineering processes underpin the CR-V’s new platform design, helping to create a lighter, stiffer chassis. The rigidity of the unibody contributes significantly to the car’s impressive NVH characteristics.

The body assembly process also involves an innovative high-efficiency joining technique. The entire inner frame is assembled first, followed by the outer frame, and then the joints. This defies the conventional method of body frame assembly, which sees the outer frame assembled first, followed by inner assembly and the joints. This new production technology contributes greatly to the overall stiffness of the body.

A short-pitch welding process places spot welds 20 mm apart in critical areas of the unibody, compared to traditional spacing of between 40 mm and 45 mm. This measure further contributes to increased stiffness and durability.

These design, engineering and manufacturing innovations provide a greater opportunity to tune the suspension for superior ride and handling performance, and help to safeguard European standards of quality and refinement.

Class-leading interior refinement

The all-new platform contributes to class-leading interior quietness and refinement, complementing the CR-V’s petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. The exemplary management of NVH is the result of minimising the generation of noise and vibration, and their transfer through the body structure, as well as extensive sound sealing and insulation techniques. The CR-V e:HEV has been tuned to make the driving experience as quiet, comfortable and refined as possible.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) reduces low-frequency noise in the interior and minimises the intrusion of engine noise into the cabin. Fitted as standard across the range, ANC uses two in-cabin microphones to monitor noises from the powertrain, and creates precisely timed ‘reverse phase’ audio signals to cancel them out. The system operates whenever the car is running, regardless of whether the audio system is on or off.

Powertrain noise is further mitigated by dedicated front, side and rear bonnet seals, a bonnet insulator panel, an engine under-cover, and dedicated insulation material within the dashboard. In the cabin, a bespoke one-piece carpet liner adds further isolation from exterior noise.

Strategically placed body sealants, as well as acoustic separators inside the A-, B- and C-pillars and the flush-mounted windscreen, contribute to cabin quietness. The separators in the pillars reduce the transmission of noise from the floor area into the cabin, while 360-degree moulded triple door seals reduce wind noise and improve isolation. Each side window also has sealing blocks in the lower front and rear corners to fill the gaps between the body and the glass to reduce noise intrusion.

The CR-V’s body panels are shaped to achieve a reduction in ‘booming’ noise, while acoustic undercovers and insulators for the front and rear wheel arches, as well as the cabin and boot floors, further reduce road noise and vibration.

Rewarding dynamics and exemplary comfort

Advanced suspension technology and body rigidity contribute to the engaging and sophisticated driving experience of the CR-V e:HEV. Ride comfort is exemplary, thanks to an intelligent mechanical setup and the integration of advanced technologies for a more compliant ride.

The platform provides the perfect foundation for the CR-V’s engaging dynamics. The engineering team set out to create a highly agile SUV with linear handling responses, under a ‘one motion, one input’ concept that focuses on predictability and immediacy of the driving experience.

At the front, lower-arm-type front MacPherson strut suspension provides high lateral rigidity for linear handling responses, and low longitudinal rigidity for optimised ride compliance. Dual pinion variable-ratio electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering – also featured on the Honda Civic – has been specifically tuned for the CR-V, with additional tuning work carried out for European models. The dual pinion system delivers exceptional feedback, with instantaneous, linear and accurate steering responses.

Vibration transfer to the steering wheel has been minimised by increasing the steering column diameter to 30 mm – 36% wider than the pre-2019 CR-V – and locating the lightweight steering motor on the dual pinion rack, rather than in the conventional position on the steering column. This results in improved low-speed manoeuvrability.

Multi-link rear suspension delivers geometrical stability for predictable high-speed driving, superior ride comfort and more linear handling in conjunction with the EPS tuning. A solid rear stabiliser bar sharpens turn-in and reduces body roll, while a floating, rubber-mounted subframe structure improves noise isolation compared to the third generation CR-V.

Hydraulic suspension bushings are fitted at the front and rear, resulting in superior ride isolation as well as enhanced chassis vibration control.

Braking is delivered by 320 mm discs at the front and 310 mm discs at the rear, enhanced by the addition of an electric brake booster (EBB). The EBB calibrates braking performance to vehicle speed and driver input and can build up superior hydraulic pressure more quickly and with less pedal effort in all braking situations compared to a conventional system.

The car’s i-MMD technology also employs a regenerative braking system to capture energy that would otherwise be lost when the car is decelerating.

Agile Handling Assist (AHA)

Honda’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) was fitted to the CR-V for the first time in 2018 and customers buying the latest model will continue to benefit from this technology. The electronic stability system has been specially tuned for the European market to reflect typical road surface conditions and driving styles. It provides subtle, discreet assistance for added safety and smoother, more predictable vehicle behaviour at low and high speeds, and with both gentle and rapid steering inputs.

CR-V e:HEV’s all-road capability is impressive thanks to its high ground clearance and latest all-wheel drive technology. The new model’s ground clearance is up to 190 mm for front-wheel-drive models and up to 200 mm for all-wheel-drive models, helped by 18-inch wheel and tyre combinations, which also convey its muscular stance.

Honda’s latest ‘Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™’ is calibrated to deliver optimum fuel efficiency and driveability. It splits torque between the front and rear wheels to aid smooth and efficient driving, even in everyday conditions. For example, it powers the rear wheels when moving off from a standstill.

The all-wheel drive system employs a multi-plate clutch that connects a propeller shaft to the rear differential. It is operated by an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump. Its lightweight and fuel-efficient design provides an optimal balance of performance, with increased on- and off-road capability and stability, without adding unnecessary weight to the powertrain. When torque transfer to the rear is not required, such as during high-speed cruising, the propeller shaft to the rear wheels is decoupled to reduce mechanical drag.

The Honda CR-V e:HEV continues to set class benchmarks for interior quality, sophistication and versatility. Retaining its spacious interior proportions, all occupants are afforded generous levels of headroom and legroom.

A horizontal layout for the instrument panel and fascia enhances the feeling of spaciousness in the cabin and conveys a sense of strength and solidity. The interior trim on the latest CR-V has been updated to reflect a more premium feel. The wood-effect trim found in the previous model has been replaced with a lustrous silver finish applied to the console, door panels and dashboard.

Metallic trim also embellishes the infotainment and climate control surrounds, steering wheel trim and door handles, adding a contemporary finish. Premium plush black seat fabric is standard, while supple, high-quality leather is available on (SR and EX OR Lifestyle and Executive) models.

Sport Line models benefit from a further range of visual enhancements. Dark wood replaces the silver interior trim on the console, dashboard and door panels, with a sophisticated piano black finish applied to the infotainment surround and climate control bezels. The steering wheel trim, gear shifter and door handles also receive the piano black treatment, with black headlining, pillar trim and leather seats completing the Sport Line experience.

The CR-V e:HEV features a central touchscreen in addition to the 7-inch Driver Information Interface (DII). The layout of the controls, with a simple cluster of physical buttons and dials beneath the touchscreen, enables users to easily adjust heating, ventilation and air-conditioning.

Hybrid system controls

The drive selector controls for the new Honda CR-V e:HEV are positioned on the centre console, with a compact switch-style transmission selector rather than a conventional lever. Drive, Park and Neutral functions require a button push, while Reverse requires a pull-up action.

‘Sport’ mode, activated via the drive selector, enables a more responsive throttle input for the hybrid system. A short-range pure EV mode is also available at the touch of a button, providing a zero-emissions range of around 2 km (1.2 miles) depending on the driving conditions and the battery’s state of charge.

Full smartphone integration

The second-generation Honda Connect software in the CR-V e:HEV offers enhanced intuitive operation and full, seamless smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Integration with Apple CarPlay means that Honda Connect brings iPhone functionality to the driving experience, delivering the interface through the built-in display. Drivers can get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music, controlled via the touchscreen or by voice using Apple’s Siri commands.

Android Auto gives drivers a simple, intuitive way to use Android smartphones through both touch and voice interfaces, minimising the potential for distraction. Supported features include Google Maps, Google Now, messaging, music and numerous other apps, depending on market.

Driver Information Interface (DII)

The driver’s instrument binnacle features a large full-colour 7-inch TFT-LCD Driver Information Interface (DII), with additional gauges for battery charge status and fuel level on e:HEV models.

The DII includes a large digital speedometer and linear power gauge with a charge status indicator. A ‘content zone’ is integrated into the lower half of the DII, which the driver can scroll through to choose from a variety of information, including navigation instructions, audio information, smartphone contacts, AWD system status, and smart vehicle maintenance information. It also features a graphic of the current power flow, indicating the vehicle’s current power source and if the battery is being charged. An ‘ECO Guide’ suggests more efficient driving techniques, and drivers can monitor their efficiency over time with a drive cycle score. They earn points for more efficient driving, with greater efficiency rewarded with leaf icons appearing in the display.

The driver uses thumbpad controls on the steering wheel to scroll and select the information displayed in the DII. It lets the driver scroll through the DII modes and adjust settings, perform alphabetic searches – of contacts or music tracks, for example – and select the preferred information to display in the instrument binnacle’s DII.

The steering wheel also includes integrated Bluetooth®3 HandsFreeLink® telephone controls, as well as controls for adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist system settings. The combination of thumbpad controls and DII in the driver’s line-of-sight minimises distractions while driving.

More versatile than ever

The CR-V features a flat boot floor and 60:40 split-fold seatbacks for faster, easier loading and the ability to load larger items. Dropping either section of the second-row bench seat can be done single-handedly; the seat base lowers towards the floor, enabling the rear seatback to lie flat on top of it. The seatback can also be ‘reset’ single-handedly.

On top grade models, a hands-free power tailgate is available, with a height-setting function. Owners can set its opening height to a desirable limit depending on space available around the car. This is particularly useful in tight spaces with low ceilings, such as a garage, or when the vehicle is backed up against a wall. An on-demand ‘Stop-and-hold’ function allows the tailgate to be stopped at any desired position, giving temporary control of the tailgate aperture (once opened beyond 1,185mm) without needing to program a new setting.

Smarter storage for all occupants

A three-mode centre console adapts to a variety of requirements to provide cabin storage space. In its ‘Console tray’ mode, it can accommodate a 5.5-inch smartphone. The tray can be placed in forward or rearward positions or stowed neatly, to enable three storage configurations. In the forward position, the smartphone tray covers up the main storage compartment for added security and privacy. When placed rearward, the tray keeps smaller items separated while enabling access to the compartment below. If the tray is stowed out of the way altogether, the storage compartment is large enough for a handbag or laptop.

Four USB charging points in the cabin enable multiple connections for phones, tablets and other personal electronic devices. There are 1.5-amp and 1.0-amp USB charging ports for front occupants, plus two high-capacity 2.5-amp USB charging ports at the back of the centre console for second-row passengers to keep their phones, tablets or handheld gaming devices charged. Top grade models also offer wireless smartphone charging for compatible devices.

In line with Honda’s ‘Safety for Everyone’ philosophy, the CR-V’s class-leading suite of passive and active safety systems is standard on all models. Its strong platform provides the foundation for exceptional safety performance, with an ‘All Directions Collision Safety’ concept.

The platform design incorporates Honda’s exclusive next-generation ACE™ (Advanced Compatibility Engineering) body structure, with a network of connected structural elements distributing collision energy more evenly. This reduces the forces transferred to the passenger cell in the event of an impact, giving superior front, side and rear crash-worthiness.

The passive safety features on the all-new CR-V are complemented by the Honda Sensing™ suite of active safety and driver assist technologies, among the most comprehensive package of safety technologies in its class. Emergency call (eCall) is also now standard for all CR-V models in Europe.

The Honda Sensing™ suite of active safety technologies includes:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System: helps to bring the car to a stop if the system determines that a collision with a vehicle detected in front is unavoidable. A warning sounds and, if necessary, brake pressure is automatically applied
  • Forward Collision Warning: scans the road ahead to warn drivers of a potential collision, and provides visual and audible alerts to prompt the driver to take corrective actions to avoid a potential collision
  • Lane Departure Warning: detects if the car strays out of its current lane without the turn signal being activated, sounding an alert to prompt the driver to make a correction
  • Road Departure Mitigation: uses data from the windscreen-mounted camera to detect whether the car is veering out of its lane. It uses the Electric Power Steering to apply subtle corrections to keep the vehicle in its lane. In certain situations it can also apply braking force. The system switches off when it detects that the driver has regained control
  • Lane Keeping Assist System: helps to keep the car in the middle of the current lane by detecting road markings with a windscreen-mounted monocular camera and making small adjustments to steer the vehicle within the white lines 
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: allows the driver to set a desired speed and following distance from a vehicle detected ahead, enabling the use of cruise control in light and variable-speed traffic
  • Traffic Sign Recognition: detects and automatically recognises road signs and displays the signs on the DII
  • Intelligent Speed Limiter: combines the automatic speed limit set by the driver with Traffic Sign Recognition to automatically adjust the vehicle speed to that indicated by the last road sign
  • Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control: a pioneering technology that debuted on the 2015 Honda CR-V, i-ACC predicts and automatically reacts to other vehicles ‘cutting-in’ on multi-lane highways. It uses a camera and a radar to sense the position of other vehicles on the road and applies an algorithm – developed with exhaustive research on European roads – to predict the likelihood of vehicles in neighbouring lanes ‘cutting-in’. Further safety technologies in the all-new CR-V include:

  • Blind Spot Information: uses radar technology to automatically detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot and alerts the driver via a warning symbol in the door mirror
  • Cross Traffic Monitor: uses rear side radar sensors to warn the driver of approaching vehicles when reversing
  • Multi-angle rear view camera: provides the driver with complete visibility and peace-of-mind when reversing. Drivers have a choice of a normal 130-degree rear view, a wide-angle 180-degree rear view, and a top-down view of the car

Also fitted as standard are Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) with traction control, enhancing control capability under acceleration, braking and cornering, and a Deflation Warning System for tyres.
